So I purchased my macbook air in 2010. I tried to restore to its factory settings and when I shut it down and restarted the computer it had a folder with a blinking question mark. So I shut down the computer for a few minutes. I turned the computer on again and now it has a globe spinning. At first it gave me a message that I didn't have time to read it (it said searching..) then it started a timer that said to wait like 2 hours. Does anybody know what this is?

After programming and writing the macros into the X-keys, move it to the Mac for operation (or reboot your system out of Boot Camp). NOTE: special keys like F13-F24 can be found under the Functions tab when programming a key and may be used in combination with modifier keys to avoid conflicts with default keyboard shortcuts.
- Sep 01, 2016 C: Boot from Removable Media — If you hold the C key during boot, the Mac will start up from removable media, such as a CD, DVD, or USB thumb drive. Since Apple has largely done away with optical drives and physical installation discs are a thing of the past, this shortcut isn’t as useful as it.
- Nov 10, 2017 If none of these steps resolve the issue, start from OS X Recovery and reinstall OS X. If Disk Utility finds issues it can't repair If Disk Utility finds issues on your startup disk that it cannot repair, you may need to back up as much of your data as possible to another drive.
That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.

If your optical driive (CD/DVD drive) isn't working you'll need to use an external drive to install the OS. I wouldn't install 10.4 Tiger though. Tiger was coded for the old Power PC processors with code added to make it work when Apple switched to Intel processors. 10.6 Snow Leopard was the first OS written specificly for the Intel processors.
The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is in the Apple online store. You can get it for $19.99. You will need to be running 10.6.8 to access the App Store. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

To Install an OS from a DVD
Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the 'c' key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
